The City Council of Grover
Beach recently kicked the Grover Beach Mayor off of the Regional Air
Pollution Board. Debbie Peterson was removed from the board for two
reasons. She spoke up frequently and passionately about removing the
dust rule, which would make the California Department of Parks and
Recreation pay one-thousand dollars per day if the Department does not
find a way to substantially lower the cubic meters of dust blowing from
Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area onto Nipomo Mesa. The way
Peterson was figuring the Parks Department would find would be to
restrict off-roading at Oceano Dunes. That is why she spoke out against
the dust rule, that is why Friends of Oceano Dunes supported her and
that is reason one why she was booted off the board. | |

Reason two was her opposition
to an 11,000 square foot conference center and lodge that the city
council approved to be built in Grover Beach. The lodge would be built
right smack dab at the entrance to Oceano Dunes at Pacific Coast Highway
and Grand Avenue. Friends of Oceano Dunes plans to sue City Council
and the California Coastal Permission over the process whereby the lodge
developers received a permit. |
